The people who gather with Dell Hanson at Farmers Sales & Service on 4th Street in Vinton will have to find a new meeting place for their morning coffee and conversation this summer.

Hanson has agreed to a flood buyout deal with the city through the FEMA Hazard Mitigation Program. His business was damaged when the Flood of 2008 caused Hinkle Creek in Vinton to rise. Flood buyout properties become city-owned green spaces; the buildings where Hanson and his son, Ken, have repaired implements for decades will be torn down after the transaction is finalized.

Hanson said he planned to have an auction sometime in the next few months, but does not yet have an auctioneer. He also is uncertain of his future plans; those who gather in his shop each weekday morning are also considering where to hold these informal meetings after the business is gone.

JR April 22, 2011, 1:04 pm I am sad to see Farmer\'s Sales & Service go, as it\'s one of the places my Grandpa coffeed & we joked that you could have a family reunion for our family on Fourth Street between Dell\'s, Henkel\'s Service and LaGrange\'s.

This is just another way the Flood of 2008 changed our town so much - I hope that someone had the foresight to photograph all the properties that were bought out before they were torn down. Certainly these happenings are for the history books.
