Kyle Koeppen, Superintendent for Vinton-Shellsburg Community School District, announced that Kent Ryan, a recently retired educator with more than thirty years experience in education and more than a decade in administration, has been selected to serve as the interim principal at Tilford Elementary School for the second semester of this school year.

"I am honored and excited to be chosen for this opportunity. I look forward to building relationships with staff, students, and families as we work together to improve upon the strong tradition of outstanding learning at Tilford," Mr. Ryan said.

Mr. Ryan retired from the Cedar Rapids Community School District last year, where he served eight years as an elementary principal and as the Elementary Director of Culture/Climate Transformation. Prior to working in Cedar Rapids, Mr. Ryan was a principal in Davenport, a literacy consultant with the Iowa Department of Education and a teacher in Des Moines. He has also served as an adjunct professor at Iowa State University and Viterbo University.

He is married to Halli Sanford-Ryan, a middle school counselor in Cedar Rapids. They have two children - Kirk, an elementary principal in West Liberty who is married to Katie, and Will, a minister in Columbia, Missouri, who is married to Hannah. They have three grandchildren. Halli and Kent enjoy outdoor activities like biking, kayaking, and golf, as well as listening to live music, and spending time with friends and family.

GS January 9, 2023, 1:37 pm This is great news for the students and parents of this school and the entire district. I attended Culver-Stockton College with Kent. In fact, he was my host when I travelled to Canton, Missouri to visit the campus. Culver is a small Christian college in Northeast Missouri. Kent is an exceptional representative of our alumni. He's an honorable man and committed professional educator. He helps others to live their best lives. What a spectacular hire - I recommend you do what you must to keep him around awhile.
