Vinton Police were contacted by officials at the Vinton-Shellsburg High School at 1018 a.m. today, reporting that a handwritten bomb threat had been found in a mens room by a student, who immediately reported it to their teacher.

Vinton-Shellsburg School officials immediately initiated an evacuation of the building, and the Vinton Police Department, with the assistance of the Benton County Sheriff's Office, began their investigation.

Vinton Police were able to review the school video surveillance system to develop a list of persons who had entered the restroom. Officers were then able to identify a suspect based on his presence in the restroom, and forensic evidence from the note and the suspect's locker.

Vinton Police have detained a 15 year male old student in connection with this matter, who will be transported to a juvenile detention facility and referred to Juvenile Probation authorities for Making a False Bomb Threat, a Class "D" Felony.

No students or staff were injured as a result of this incident, and classes had resumed by 12:30 pm.
