In a post, the Benton County Sheriff's Office put out a warning to area residents.
"We continue to receive reports of Fraud by various methods of scammers. Unfortunately, we are often faced with the same outcome, unrecoverable losses. Please take the time to educate yourself and family members about the warning signs of a scam. We have received reports of scams involving large monetary prizes, brand-new vehicles, grandchild incarceration, technical support, and so many more. Our victims are often elderly individuals providing gift cards, large sums of cash and even banking information. If you, or someone you know may be a victim of a scam, we encourage you to report it before it's too late. Additional information on various types of scams and how to keep yourself protected can be found at https://iowafraudfighters.gov/.
People 60 years and older are usually the targets of these scams. As a result more than 7 million Americans lose almost $3 Billion each year.
Have the "the talk" with parents and grandparents. Should they receive a phone call about one of the kids or grandkids, set up a password that should be given before the call can continue.
Email is also another slippery one. You might receive notice about an order you just placed. Or some hoax that might require you bank card information. If you've fallen for the scam, call you bank immediately to cancel your card. A $10 replacement fee is much cheaper than a scam!
