The biggest single thing to move as part of the relocation of the Benton County Sheriff's Office back to the new LEC was loaded on a trailer yesterday.

The temporary 911 radio equipment room, which was placed near the old 911 tower after the Flood of 2008, was sold to Lattice Communications for $4,500. The company offered that bid, the highest of two submitted to the county in May. In addition to the $4,500, the company also had to hire the crane which lifted the building onto a flatbed trailer.

In the new LEC, the 911 radio room is one of three areas of the building made from tornado-proof reinforced concrete. The other two areas are the 911 dispatchers room and the Emergency Management Agency office and EOC area.

Deputies watching the lifting of the temporary communications building said they were told the building weighed 125 tons.

New building in use

Most of the administrative area of the new LEC is in use. The patrol division officers and the civil and administrative officers have begun moving in to the new LEC. Most of the desks are set up, and boxes containing the officers' equipment can be seen throughout the building.

"It feels like home," said Bonnie Ehlinger, one of the secretaries.

The prisoners have not yet been transferred to the new jail; that is expected to happen in the next day or two.
