Having conquered the football field, the gymnasium floors and various stages throughout the school year, the Vinton-Shellsburg High School Marching Band is now taking their show to the streets.

For the second time since 2005, the band will represent Iowa in the National Independence Day Parade July 4, as they march down Constitution Avenue in Washington, D.C.

And it's precisely because of the band members' hard work and success that the band has that opportunity, says director Karl Smith.

"This opportunity is a reward for their outstanding performances of the past few years," said Smith, as the band members ended their street marching rehearsal Friday morning. Throughout the past few years, the VSHS bands (Marching, Concert and Jazz) have consistently earned Division 1 ratings and scored well in contests. The Jazz Band has made it to the State Championships the past two years.

Smith said many people helped the band to achieve this success as well as the opportunity to return to Washington, D.C. He thanked the school administration for making a successful music program a priority. The band parents also have an important role, helping their students individually and also volunteering for many band events and fund-raisers.

The director also thanked former Gov. Chet Culver and current Gov. Terry Branstad for their letters of nomination. U.S. Senators Tom Harkin and Charles Grassley also helped, and have given the band a chance to visit a session of Congress.

The band leaves via bus on July 1 and returns July 6.
