Benton County, Iowa - Benton County Extension and Outreach's 4-H Summer Science Discovery camp brought natural resources and environmental education to 126 kindergarten through fifth grade students this summer. Community program sites include Vinton, Atkins, Urbana, Keystone, Van Horne, Belle Plaine, and Blairstown.

Summer 4-H learning experiences, like Summer Science Discovery Camp, help reduce summer learning loss for youth. The 2024 4-H Summer Science Discovery Camp theme was nature and then environment. From observing worms and learning about soil to exploring sun safety and trees- this year's program theme leveraged hands-on learning in natural environments to create impact for youth. After camp, 98% of youth participants reported that they learned about plants and animals at camp. Agriculture and Natural Resources is one of Iowa 4-H's five program priority areas.

4-H Summer Science Discovery Camp also aims to create a safe, fun learning environment for youth to build friendships and feel a sense of belonging during summer when school is out. 93% of participants reported feeling that they belong while at 4-H Summer Science Discovery Camp. 4-H staff prioritize creating a positive learning environment by partnering with youth to set camp rules, providing time to socialize and play, and being responsive to participants' needs.

"4-H Summer Science Discovery Camp has a rich history in Benton County," shared Emily Damro, Iowa 4-H Youth Program Specialist, "youth in Benton County enjoy learning about new themes each summer and often are return campers because they enjoy the opportunity for hands-on learning with 4-H." Greg Walston, the Benton County

Extension Director partners with cities and local businesses to plan site locations and generate funding for the annual 4-H Summer Science Discovery Camp to keep costs affordable for families of participating youth and contribute to a short-term childcare solution in Benton County.

72% of youth participating in 4-H Summer Science Discovery camp this year were new to the 4-H program in Benton County. Participating youth don't need to be enrolled 4-H members to experience camp but are encouraged to continue their learning about the year's camp theme by enrolling in a local 4-H club the following September. Benton County has 18 4-H clubs led by community volunteers and supports youth who choose independent 4-H membership, serving over 400 students annually with the 4-H club program.
