With winter on the horizon, friends and family of Marc Merchant, a long-time resident of Vinton, gathered on Sunday to lend a helping hand. Marc, who has spent 28.5 years working for Benton County's Secondary Roads Department, is currently battling stage 4 pancreatic and liver cancer. Though he's usually the first to offer help to others, this time it was Marc's turn to receive support from those close to him.
Despite his illness, Marc wasn't content to sit back and watch. Known for his strong work ethic, he joined the volunteers in preparing firewood for the winter-something he's done every year to keep his home warm during the cold months. His family played their part by keeping the crew fueled. Donna, Marc's mom, Jordan Merchant and Renae Bell all cooked up a hearty lunch as the group prepared to start the day's work.
A convoy of vehicles arrived at Marc's house armed with chainsaws, a log splitter, and work gloves. The group of volunteers got straight to work, cutting, splitting, and stacking wood. The team worked efficiently, ensuring Marc had enough firewood to last through the winter.
For those gathered, it wasn't about grand gestures-it was about helping a neighbor, friend, and family member in need. In just a few hours, the volunteers built a substantial woodpile, giving Marc one less thing to worry about as winter approaches.
In Vinton, supporting one another in times of need is second nature. As the woodpile grew, it was clear that the strength of the community runs deep.
After all, that's just what you do in Vinton.
