The Vinton Fire Department will lead "Operation EDITH" this Thursday at 7:00 p.m., as part of Fire Prevention Week. The program, an acronym for Exit Drill In The Home, is a fire-safety initiative designed to encourage families, especially those with young children, to discuss and practice fire escape plans at home.
Why Focus on Children?
Statistics highlight the importance of fire safety education for children. According to national data, children under 15 account for 12% of home fire fatalities and 10% of related injuries. Tragically, children under five are twice as likely to die in a fire compared to older children and adults. Many young children, when faced with fire, instinctively hide in places like closets or under beds, where they become trapped.
By participating in Operation EDITH, parents have the opportunity to teach and reinforce vital fire safety skills. The program emphasizes that children learn best by example, making it essential for families to practice exit drills at least twice a year.
What is Operation EDITH?
Operation EDITH encourages parents to walk through a home escape plan with their children, teaching them what to do in the event of a fire and where to meet after exiting the home. On Thursday, October 8th at 7:00 p.m., the Vinton Fire Department will sound their sirens, signaling families to practice their fire escape drill. If your home is in an area where the siren is not heard, you're still encouraged to participate at the designated time.
Parents are also reminded to install smoke detectors on every level of their home and regularly check them to ensure they're working properly.
Fire Safety Tips for Children:
- Teach children what a smoke detector sounds like.
- Instruct them on what to do when the alarm goes off: "Get Low and Go!" to avoid inhaling smoke.
- Designate a family meeting spot outside the home where everyone should gather after escaping.
To show participation in Operation EDITH, families are encouraged to turn on their porch lights at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday night, indicating they have practiced their fire escape plan.
