At last weeks Benton County Supervisors' meeting, they had a packed agenda covering everything from public health to road improvements.
Tackling Opioid AddictionThe board took a significant step toward addressing opioid addiction by approving a new program in partnership with the Area Substance Abuse Council (ASAC). A memorandum of understanding was presented to the board, and County Attorney Ray Lough explained that a committee had worked hard to craft a thoughtful plan that offers the most help.
The program, costing $70,000 for its first year, will bring a care coordinator and provider directly to Benton County, increasing access for people in Vinton and Belle Plaine without requiring trips to Cedar Rapids. If successful, the county will explore continuing the program long-term. Lough said everyone is excited to get the program started.
Speed Limit Change for Nathan's Mile?Vinton City Administrator Chris Ward brought up a potential speed limit change for the road along Nathan's Mile Trail. While supervisors didn't take any action, discussions are expected to continue.
Supervisor Tracy Seeman also encouraged the city to work with the East Central Council of Governments on a grant for a nearby dirt road project.
Road and Bridge ProjectsThe board approved a culvert replacement plan on 32nd Avenue Drive in Florence Township and awarded a $454,494 contract to K Construction Inc. of Elkader for a bridge replacement on 26th Avenue Drive.
EMS Funding DecidedThe board reviewed recommendations from the Emergency Medical Services Advisory Council on how to divide a trust fund among EMS providers. Services in Benton County, including North Benton, Belle Plaine, Blairstown, and other first responders, will receive funding.
Communities like La Porte City, Elberon, Hiawatha, and Center Point, which provide EMS services in Benton County, were also considered. Supervisors approved the funding distribution and will revisit it in November 2025 to assess its effectiveness. Atkins resident Dan Rammelsberg was appointed to the council.
New Sheriff VehiclesThe sheriff's department will soon receive three new Durango SUVs after the board approved a bid of $44,645 each from Thys Motor Company in Belle Plaine. The price reflects a government discount.
Budget Amendment Hearing SetThe board scheduled a public hearing for a fiscal year 2025 budget amendment on Tuesday, January 21 at 9:30 a.m. The primary reason for the amendment is to cover costs for a patient in juvenile detention. Department heads will be notified if their budgets need updates.
