The box office was filled with cries of "Are you not entertained?!" as Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix took moviegoers back to ancient Rome in "Gladiator", Barry Bonds made history as the first MLB player to hit a home run into San Francisco Bay (granted with some "help"), and GPS was released to public use after creation by the US military. However, another event happened in May of 2000: Jeff "Jed" Kenney joined the Vinton Fire Department and began his 24 years of service to his community. If you have ever met Jed you certainly were quite entertained, only with laughter instead of slaughter!Often another quick response from across the street at Vinton Municipal Electric Utility and then the Vinton Electrical Generation Plant, Jed was instrumental in responding to calls during a very tough time for small-town rural fire departments: the business day.Jed's service was also marked by many years of efficiently running fundraisers as he was the steady foundation our pancake breakfasts and fish frys needed to serve our community in a very different way: with full stomachs! Jed was our fire station's best steward as he kept the station clean and organized, the laundry clean and folded (just like at home we are sure!), and the station kitchen spick and span with a gentle correction to anyone that left a mess! Always quick to start a laugh, Jed knew only friends at the station over the years.Enjoy your retirement Jed! We will try our best to keep the station to your high standards!
