Celebrating 109 birthdays is a pretty big deal. Receiving birthday cards over more than a century has evolved from a handwritten wish to an online source of well wishes.

However, when Alice Hootman's daughter requested that we put out a call for birthday cards to celebrate her 109th birthday, she didn't expect to receive two special letters of recognition from the leaders in the state.

She received a Certificate of Recognition from State Representative Thomas Gerhold congratulating her. This was also signed by Pat Grassley the speaker of the Iowa House. This made her day as well as those in her family. But that was just a warm up for her letter from Governor Kim Reynolds, who wished her a happy birthday and thanked her for her service at the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School and at the county home.

Alice is pictured with her granddaughter and her special letter. The family would like to thank each of you for reaching out and sending your birthday wishes to their mother and grandmother it made for a very special day!

Thank you Vinton Today readers, you are the best!
