Vinton-Shellsburg Community School District is pleased to announce the hiring of Christine McSweeney as the new High School Associate Principal and Aric Chvala as the new Activities Director for Vinton-Shellsburg. Both bring extensive experience in education and leadership that will strengthen the district's commitment to student growth, engagement, and success.

Christine McSweeney joins the high school administrative team with a wealth of experience in special education and student support. With 27 years in education, including roles as a special education teacher, consultant, and administrator, she has built a career dedicated to fostering inclusive learning environments and supporting students with behavioral and academic needs. McSweeney most recently served as a Special Education Consultant for Grant Wood AEA, where she worked closely with Vinton-Shellsburg's middle and high school staff to develop effective strategies for student success.

McSweeney holds a Master's Degree in Special Education from the University of Northern Iowa and a Specialist in Education from Drake University, specializing in Educational Leadership and Special Education Supervision. Her extensive background in student support and professional development aligns with the district's mission to create a positive and engaging learning environment for all students.

"I am honored to join the administrative team at Vinton-Shellsburg High School, having begun my educational career at Vinton-Shellsburg, it is truly meaningful to come full circle. I look forward to the opportunity to once again contribute to this team and district." said McSweeney. "Having worked with the district in various capacities, I have seen firsthand the dedication of the staff and students. I look forward to collaborating with teachers, students, and families to continue building a school culture that promotes academic achievement, personal growth, and positive relationships."

Aric Chvala steps into the role of Activities Director, bringing 22 years of experience as an educator, coach, and leader within the Vinton-Shellsburg district. Having served as a high school business teacher, instructional coach, and most recently, high school facilitator, Chvala has demonstrated his commitment to student development both in and out of the classroom. His leadership extends into athletics, where he has coached football, basketball, and track, earning multiple accolades, including District and WaMaC Coach of the Year.

Chvala holds a Bachelor's Degree in Business Teaching from the University of Northern Iowa, a Master's Degree in Professional Education from Morningside University, and a Master's in School Leadership from Dordt University. With his extensive background in student engagement and extracurricular programming, he is well-equipped to oversee the school's robust activities and athletics programs. Mr. Chvala will also continue to engage in leading programs like the school's Blended VIKES Virtual program, attendance, etc. Chvala will be supporting both Middle School and High School Activities.

"I am excited to expand my role in supporting both academic and extracurricular programs at Vinton-Shellsburg," Chvala stated. "Helping students grow through activities, and academic programs is a passion of mine, and I look forward to working with staff, students, and families to ensure every student has opportunities to thrive and participate in as many opportunities as possible.

High School Principal Matt Kingsbury expressed his enthusiasm for the new hires, stating, "Christine and Aric bring an incredible depth of experience and a true passion for student success. Christine's expertise in student support and behavior management will be invaluable, and Aric's long-standing commitment to our school community makes him the perfect fit for this role. We are excited to welcome them to our leadership team."

The hirings follow the retirement of current Activities Director Jim Struve, who has served the school district for 37 years. Mr. Struve will finish his contract in June and the new hires will assume their roles July 1st.

The Vinton-Shellsburg Community School District is confident that McSweeney and Chvala will make a lasting impact on students, staff, and the community. Their leadership will help shape the future of Vinton-Shellsburg High School, ensuring continued success in academics, activities, and student development.
