Belle Plaine residents reported on Friday morning shortly after 6:00 a.m. that in the northwest side of the town, that there was a heavy law enforcement presence. This was followed by what residents assumed was a "flash bag" or a loud boom near a residence in the area of 5th Ave.

Belle Plaine Police Department released the following on Friday: 

On February 25, 2025, a report was received that William Atkinson, 31, of Belle Plaine had made threats towards a financial company. A welfare check was requested and then conducted at his residence by Belle Plaine Police. The officer found Atkinson to be outside his home. Atkinson fled the area in his car and drove past the officer while rapidly accelerating and yelling at the officer. The sideview mirror of the vehicle struck the officer's hand as Atkinson drove off. 

On February 28, 2025, at 6:00AM, a search warrant was executed at 1513 5th Avenue, Belle Plaine, with assistance from the Iowa State Patrol Area D Tactical Team. William Atkinson surrendered to law enforcement at 6:23AM.

William Atkinson was charged with Threats of Terrorism and Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations While Using a Dangerous Weapon. 

This investigation continues and further charges are pending.  

All Charges are subject to review by The Benton County Attorney's Office. An arrest or criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the Defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
