News : 5K walk/run and golf tourney to raise money for VGH mammography services

For the past 20 years, women in our region have received mammography services from Mercy Hospital. Their imaging lab has been driven to Vinton and parked behind the hospital for two days each month, and they typically perform 30 – 40 mammograms every month.

While this has been a valuable service, we look forward to being able to provide mammography service Monday through Friday in our Imaging Department at the Hospital. This is the final phase of the recent renovation and expansion plan that has provided us with such an outstanding healthcare facility.

The Virginia Gay Hospital Hospital Foundation and the Benton County Breast Friends and Fighters survivor group have joined forces to put together a fundraising weekend designed to provide financial support for the addition of digital mammography in our hospital. For the past couple of years our high school athletic teams have held fundraising efforts to assist us in meeting our goals as well.

One fund-raising event, the 5K walk/run takes place Saturday, Aug. 6, at Riverside Park. The event begins at 8 a.m. Cost is $20 for adults and free for children under age 12.

The other event is a golf tournament that takes place at the Vinton Country Club on Friday, Aug. 5. Cost is $30 per person for the 9-hole, 4-person best shot event. Teee times are 1 and 4 p.m. The entry fee includes golf, dinner, a T-shirt and prizes.
