RESOLUTION #25-20

PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, sexual assault affects women, children and men of all racial, cultural and economic backgrounds; and

WHEREAS, in addition to the immediate physical and emotional costs, sexual assault may also have associated consequences of post-traumatic stress disorder, substance abuse, depression, homelessness, eating disorders and suicide; and

WHEREAS, sexual assault can be devastating not only to the survivor, but also for the family, friends, and community of the survivor; and

JG April 10, 2025, 11:07 pm I find it completely hypocritical of Benton County to declare this month as sexual assault awareness month, when on March 28th, one of our Benton County judges let a man off with probation for sex crimes. His victims are protected only by a 5 year restraining order, and our children are protected only by him having to register as a sex offender. There is a major problem in our community when we tout standing up for victims of sex crimes as we let offenders walk free in our community. Those children, and that family deserved better, our children and community deserve better. This is exactly why there shouldn't be plea bargains with criminals.

Editor's Note: The case was heard in the Benton County courthouse, however, it was tried by a district court judge, not under the control of Benton County.
