This week, as flags quietly wave in the spring breeze and sirens echo with a little more reverence, Vinton joins communities across the country in observing National Police Week, a time set aside to honor the courage, commitment, and sacrifice of our nation's law enforcement officers.

First established in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy, National Police Week is more than a line on the calendar-it's a heartfelt reminder of the critical role these men and women play in the safety and strength of our communities.

Closer to home, we pause to recognize the steady leadership of Vinton Police Chief Ted Paxton and Benton County Sheriff Dave Upah, whose tireless work and dedication set the tone for public service in our area. Whether it's a midnight patrol, a call for backup, or simply a friendly wave at the corner of Fourth Street, our law enforcement officers reflect the best of small-town values: duty, honor, and community.

May 15 marks Peace Officer Memorial Day, a solemn occasion during National Police Week that pays tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice-including K9 partners-while serving and protecting. Their memory lives on in every badge worn and every shift served.

The men and women in law enforcement work tirelessly to safeguard our communities. So if you see Chief Paxton or Sheriff Upah this week-or any of the officers who quietly go about the business of keeping Vinton safe-take a moment to say thank you. It's a small gesture for a big job.

Thank you to both our Vinton Police Department and our Benton County Sheriffs Department!
