The weekend of the planned 27th annual Vinton Cruise was "chaos," said Tom Johnson, one of the organizers who made the decision to reschedule the event for Aug. 13.
It's a challenge to reschedule such an event, because almost every weekend there is some kind of antique car show or cruise somewhere in Iowa or one of the neighboring states. Organizers do not know how the rescheduling will affect participation; there is also another event in Manchester that same day.
The three vehicles that the cruise organizers brought for a photo to promote the cruise all have recent stories to add to their decades-old history.
Scherbring's blue 1969 Chevy SS looks just like it did two years ago, although it sustained much damage when another man crossed the center line on a highway and collided with Scherbring.
The car looks exactly like it did before the wreck, said Scherbring, although it has many new parts.
During the July 11 storm, the garage door where some antique cars were stored blew in, landing on the 1957 Chevy owned by Tom Johnson. That car now has a few deep scratches on its bright red paint; Johnson is working with restorers to decide on the best way to repair the damage.
Larry Albertson's car, a 1968 Mustang, was recently restored. It has a new color, "poppy red," that was one of the colors available on the Mustang that year.
Registration begins at 3 p.m.; the cruise starts at 7. The route will be the same as previous years.
