The Benton County American Legion Auxiliary brought big smiles to the Iowa Veterans Home in Iowa City this past week, hosting what the home described as "an amazing Ice Cream Social" for residents.
Members of the Auxiliary arrived armed with all the supplies needed to create an unforgettable afternoon for the veterans. Residents gathered to enjoy not only the delicious sundaes but also the warm company and conversation the Auxiliary brought along with the sweets.
"Our residents had a wonderful time enjoying the sweet treats and even sweeter camaraderie," staff at the Iowa Veterans Home shared. "The group brought along everything you could imagine to top your ice cream with!"
Tables were loaded with an impressive spread of toppings, offering something for every taste. The classic favorites - chocolate syrup, caramel drizzle, bananas, strawberries, and fluffy whipped cream - were all accounted for. But the Auxiliary didn't stop there. Residents also had their pick of cookies, cupcakes, and homemade bars to accompany their frozen desserts, creating an irresistible buffet of goodies.
The event wasn't just about ice cream, though. For many of the veterans, it was a chance to share stories, laughter, and memories with visitors who truly appreciated their service. The Auxiliary members spent time chatting with the residents, listening to stories of their military days and making sure everyone felt special.
Staff at the Iowa Veterans Home expressed their gratitude for the Auxiliary's generosity and thoughtfulness. "The Veterans Home was very appreciative of the treats and extra attention to those in their care," they said. "It means so much to our residents when members of the community take time to visit and bring joy to their day."
The Auxiliary's visit was a sweet reminder that even a simple scoop of ice cream, served with kindness, can go a long way in making someone feel valued and remembered.
