News : Alliant Energy providing PowerHouse DVDs and meters to libraries & schools

Alliant Energy is making its “PowerHouse“ television show available free of charge to libraries and schools throughout its service territory in Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Aired on TV throughout the Midwest, “PowerHouse” shows homeowners how to make the most of their energy usage and save money.

For 15 years, “PowerHouse” has given homeowners practical advice on topics including energy efficiency, conservation, safety, and the environment. The show focuses on do-it-yourself projects, with demonstrations of improvements any homeowner can tackle.

The complete set of 59 episodes is available to libraries and schools in the Alliant Energy service territory at no cost. Each episode focuses on a variety of topics, such as: installing storm doors, choosing new appliances, and building a green home.

In addition to the DVDs, schools and libraries can get portable electric meters for students or library patrons to determine how much electricity is consumed by the appliances at home. Electric appliances can be plugged into the energy meter and it will show how efficient (or wasteful) they really are. A display will show users the amount of electricity the appliance is using. This will allow users to calculate the annual operating costs of a specific appliance by the day, week, month or year.
