In every town, there are people who answer the call-not for a paycheck, but because they care. In Vinton, those people wear the uniform of the Vinton Fire Department.
They don't punch a clock or work a typical shift. When the pager goes off, they go-leaving behind family dinners, warm beds, and busy workdays. While the rest of us move away from danger, they run toward it. And they do it all as volunteers.
If you've ever seen them in action, you know what true commitment looks like. One night that forever marked our town-and now lives on in vivid color-is the fire of February 8, 2018.
It was the kind of night that cuts through every layer of clothing, with temperatures hovering around zero. But even the bitter cold didn't stop the Vinton Fire Department from stepping up. Flames tore through downtown buildings, threatening to claim more than just structures. But our firefighters met that night with courage, skill, and resolve. When incidents like this happen, area fire departments are quick to assist neighboring departments. This was one of those nights.
To honor that bravery, a mural now graces the west side of the Benton County Title building, across from the courthouse. It captures not just the fire itself, but the strength of those who fought it. The Vinton Guild of Fine Arts shared:
"We are happy to announce a new addition to Vinton's murals. Located on the west side of the Benton County Title building, across from the courthouse, it's positioned to honor the first responders, and memorialize the night we lost several beautiful historic biuldings to a fire. Thanks to Chuck Juhl for his desire for this mural, and Kim Fraizier for bringing it to life!"
It's more than paint in a mural-it's a reminder of the heart and grit that live among us.
But as meaningful as the mural is, it can't carry a hose or crawl through smoke. Our community still needs people. More volunteers. More everyday heroes.
The Vinton Fire Department is full of dedicated individuals. They train to provide assistance in any kind of emergency. They serve with heart-and a willingness to be there when someone's in need.
Each October the department steps into the local schools in an effort to take away any fear that children might face during a fire. They introduce the children to their gear and simulate what a fire might be like. They practice the stop-drop-and roll and teach them how to respond during a fire.
The department also holds a couple of fundraisers a year to supply the station with equipment and supplies. If you would like to send them a check now however, you can do that! Just mail your donation to:

To every member of the Vinton Fire Department-past and present-thank you. You've shown us what it means to serve. You've shown us that community is more than a place. It's people who show up for each other.
Let's continue to honor their service-by sharing their story and supporting their mission.
