23-year-old Atreyu Michael Tarbill of Belle Plaine is facing several charges after throwing knives at officers who responded to a call to his home, allegedly. Responding to the call were the Tama County Sheriff's Office assisted by the Benton County Sheriff's Office, Belle Plaine Police Department, Tama Police Department, Toledo Police Department, and Belle Plaine EMS.
During a standoff on Sunday, July 27, officers were called to the residence located between Elberon and Belle Plaine for the report of a domestic assault. Tarbill, had assaulted a family member resulting in a possible broken wrist. As officers arrived, Tarbill grabbed a knife, and a brief standoff followed.
It was reported that "During the standoff, Atreyu threw multiple objects at officers to include a crow bar, and knives. Atreyu also shattered multiple glass items and broke every TV in the house."
The first deputy who responded worked to evacuate the home and bring the other individuals in the house to safety. When the second deputy arrived, Tarbill began throwing kitchen knives out the windows. It was reported that one of the items missed a deputy's head "by only a few inches."
The department reported that though this situation could have been met with deadly force legally and morally, the officers were able to resolve the incident. "That decision was not made out of fear or hesitation. It was a result of clear thinking, proper training, communication, and doing the job the right way under pressure."
Tarbill eventually came out of the residence and a taser was deployed to subdue him. He was taken into custody without serious injury.
