Students from Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School gathered for the annual Viking Leadership Council Retreat, a day dedicated to building leadership skills, teamwork, and school culture.
The retreat focused on the theme of respect and offered students opportunities to reflect on what it means to be a leader both in and out of the classroom.
Students began the day by learning about communication styles through the True Colors activity, which helped them understand their own strengths and how to work more effectively with others. A highlight of the event was guest speaker Clay McBride, who shared an inspiring message about the importance of leadership and how young people can make an impact in their community.
In addition, students engaged in meaningful discussions about respect at Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School. Through role-playing scenarios, they examined how respect looks in real-life situations and how leaders can set the example for their peers.
The retreat also included team-building games designed to strengthen collaboration, problem-solving, and trust among council members. "Our Viking Leadership Council continues to show that leadership is about respect, communication, and teamwork," said Wes Recker, who helped lead the retreat. "These students are setting the tone for the year ahead."
The Viking Leadership Council serves as a voice for students at Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School, empowering them to model leadership and contribute to the mission and vision of the school.
