In a statement from Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, she said, "The Department of War has identified four Army Reserve soldiers with the 103rd Sustainment Command based in Des Moines, Iowa, who were killed in action when Iran struck Port Shuaiba in Kuwait on Sunday. Among them is one Iowan: Sergeant Declan Coady, 20, from West Des Moines.
Today, we mourn the loss of Specialist Declan Coady, a young Iowan who heroically answered his nation’s call to duty and gave the ultimate sacrifice,” Governor Kim Reynolds said. “Kevin and I offer our deepest condolences to his family and ask all Iowans to join us in prayer for their healing and comfort.”
Coady, 20, was a sophomore at Drake University serving as an Army reservist from West Des Moines. He joined the Army Reserves in August 2023 and killed in action on Sunday, March 1, when Iranian struck the U.S. Base of Camp Buehring, in Kuwait.
He was and Information Technologies Specialist with the Army.
All four were assigned to the 103rd Sustainment Command in Des Moines.
To date, six soldiers have been killed, and four identified. Captain Cody A. Khork of Florida, Sergeant 1st Class Noah L. Tietjens of Nebraska, Sergeant 1st Class Nicole M. Amor of Minnesota, and Sergeant Declan J. Coady of Iowa.
In December of 2025, the state remembered two Iowa National Guard members, Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard of Marshalltown and Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar of Des Moines, who were serving in Syria and killed by a lone gunman associated with ISIS.
