In a statement from the Department of War, the announcement of the death of an Iowa Army Reserve Soldier who was supporting Operation Epic Fury.

Major Jeffrey R. O'Brien, 45, of Indianola, Iowa, died on March 1, 2026, in Port Shuaiba, Kuwait, during an unmanned aircraft system attack. The Soldier was assigned to the 103rd Sustainment Command, Des Moines, Iowa. The incident is under investigation.

Senator Charles Grassley released the following statement, “It’s devastating to learn a second Iowan has lost his life in combat. Maj. O’Brien’s heroism will be remembered forever, along with his fellow fallen soldier and Iowan, Sgt. Declan Coady. 

  “With heavy hearts, Barbara and I are offering our prayers for Iowa’s grieving Gold Star Families. May God protect all our troops abroad.”  

Iowa Governor Reynolds, said, "The U.S. Department of War has announced that Major Jeffrey O’Brien, 45, is among the six Army Reserve soldiers killed when Iran struck Port Shuaiba in Kuwait on March 1, 2026. All soldiers were assigned to the 103rd Sustainment Command in Des Moines, Iowa.  

Major O’Brien is the second Iowan to be identified. Sergeant Declan Coady, 20, of West Des Moines was also among the casualties.     

“Our hearts are broken by the deaths of Major Jeffrey O’Brien and Sergeant Declan Coady, two brave Iowa soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice to secure freedom and peace,” said Governor Kim Reynolds. “On behalf of a grateful state, Kevin and I offer our prayers and condolences for their families, and we ask all Iowans to stand united in support of our fallen soldiers and those who loved them.”
