Vinton Police were called to 300 South "Q" Avenue in Vinton at approximately 1:13 p.m. today by a 20 year old female at that residence, who reported she had been shot, allegedly while struggling with an intruder in her home.

No one else was home at the time, other than her 1 year old son, whom she had placed in a car seat inside a car in the driveway prior to the incident taking place.

Subsequent investigation revealed no evidence of forced entry, that the firearm used was owned by another member of the household, and that the shot had been self-inflicted.

The patient was transported to Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton, and subsequently transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Her condition is not known at this time.

Vinton Police have concluded their initial investigation and search of the home, and have no reason to believe that the general public was, or is, in any danger.

A child welfare referral has been made to the Iowa Department of Human Services, and the matter continues to be investigated by the Vinton Police Department.

No criminal charges are anticipated at this time.

a February 24, 2012, 12:27 pm Just wondering why the sheriffs weren\'t brought in to investigate this further... why would someone lie about shooting themselves
JTCoP February 24, 2012, 3:45 pm To answer the previous commenter\'s question, 2 Detectives from the Benton County Sheriff\'s Office did assist the Vinton Police Department in this investigation, however, under Iowa Law, the primary jurisdiction and responsibility within any incorporated City with an established Police Department rests with that Police Department, not the Sheriff\'s Office.
February 24, 2012, 8:07 pm People lie about crazy stuff all the time. She may have lied about the shooting because she was seeking attention. She may be a troubled girl. Hope that her and the families are all coping with this as best as they can. I can\'t imagine what would cause one to inflict pain on themselves, but sadly, it happens. I think everyone that was involved in this situation did their jobs the way they were suppose to.
LAV February 27, 2012, 1:27 pm Thinking back to the school bomb threat, the John\'s Quickstop robbery, etc.. VPD has done an excellent job of investigating and colaborating with other agencies. Good job VPD!!
