Danny Roehr was elected mayor of Shellsburg on Tuesday, in a special election.
Roehr, one of two candidates on the ballot, apparently won by one vote.
The Shellsburg City Council authorized the special election following the death of Mayor-Elect Joyce Pence on Dec. 23. She had won the mayoral race in the November general election.
Results are still unofficial, pending canvassing by the Benton County Board of Supervisors during their March 13 meeting.
Roehr, a former council member and a 1978 graduate of Shellsburg High School, received 67 votes, and Sharon Heneghan, 34. There were also 66 write-in votes, all for Shadoe Vogt, although there were several different spellings of Vogt's name. Vogt had run against Pence in November; she defeated him by a 140-105 margin.
