The Vinton Lions Club held their regular Wednesday meeting at the Pizza Ranch. There were 48 members and 1 guest present. During the business portion of the meeting, member Barry Lefstad announced that the Benton County Historical Society is sponsoring The Red Cedar Chamber concert Friday, June 4that 7 pm. Member Cal Rickels thanked the members for their cooperation in wishing his wife Megan a happy birthday. She received 162 text messages, 72 emails, several phone calls, and even an electronic birthday card. Rickels had asked the Lions club members to bombard his wife with well wishes, and the members provided an overwhelming response. Also, Mark Wilberg announced candidates for upcoming officer elections. Long time member Diane Utsinger announced that on Wednesday, June 9ththe Iowa Board of Regents will hold their June meeting at the Iowa Braille school. Utsinger invited the Lions club membership to join the Regents for lunch. President Don Eells encouraged the membership to attend to show support for the Braille school’s residential education programs.

After the business meeting, member Gerald Pedersen introduced retired federal game warden Bill Fuchs. Fuchs addressed the membership regarding his 30 years on the job with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. Fuchs told the audience that there have been regulations regarding wildlife protection since the late 1700’s. He went on to provide a history of the regulation of fish and wildlife in the United States.

The Vinton Lions club is one of the largest and most active service organizations in Vinton. They provide financial and physical support to many community activities each year. The most recognizable fixture in the community is their funnel cake trailer which provides tasty treats at nearly every public event. The club meets every Wednesday at 12 noon at the Pizza Ranch restaurant in downtown Vinton. New members are always welcome.
