2009-2010 has been the a great year for the fine arts programs of Vinton-Shellsburg High School.

And the spectators at the annual event saw many of those successes one more time before the school year ended during the Cabaret event Saturday, May 14, at the school.

The VS Band set many records and returned its Jazz Band to the State Championships for the first time in a decade. Several unique speech acts received Division 1 ratings at District and State competitions. The show choir, DanSing Corps, scored highly in its competitions throughout the year. And the art students won several first, second or third-place awards at the WaMaC art festival earlier this year.

The art work was on display in the lunchroom as the band, choir and speech performers filled the stage in the auditorium. Several choirs, the Jazz Band, and DanSing Corps performed several numbers. There were also individual performances by Alyssa Hanson, Emma Clingman and trombone player Chelsea Brown.

Hanson performed the "Alto's Lament," singing a medley from well-known songs in a composition that allowed the alto to sing other parts while singing about her desire to sing something besides alto parts.

Clingman's speech routine was a music act as well; she performed a song showing the perspective of a wife in a troubled marriage.

And Brown, who won several honors with the trombone the past few years, performed another solo, despite having a broken hand on her right finger suffered in her other extracurricular event: Playing goalie for the V-S girls soccer team.

AD Jim Struve presented Band Director Karl Smith the official Jazz Band portrait which was taken at the State Jazz Championships earlier this spring. Smilth also presented a video tribute to the band seniors, honoring them for their accomplishments in the past year.
