The Benton County Above the Influence Coalition hosted Training for Intervention ProcedureS (TIPS) sessions in on September 19th and 20th, 2012 as part of the Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant (SPF SIG) project funded by the Iowa Department of Public Health. Nine staff members from Newhall First Stop and the Pearl Street Social Club completed the training, and will receive their certifications within the next month. TIPS classes train alcohol servers and sellers on proper sales techniques to help eliminate underage sales, decrease binge drinking and reduce liability concerns for businesses operating a liquor license. Participants learn effective ways of refusing service to intoxicated patrons, ways to recognize fake IDs or attempts to purchase underage, and receive suggestions on how to protect a business from legal action. In addition to increasing staff knowledge base and protecting businesses, TIPS has other benefits. In some cases, bars and restaurants with TIPS-certified staff can receive a reduction on their Dram Shop insurance, sometimes up to a 6% discount. Businesses should contact their insurance provider for more information on this discount. TIPS trainings will be hosted regularly in Benton County, and the next classes will be in November and February. To register your business, contact Jenn Draper at 319-472-2443 or jdraper@asac.us.
