Homemade butter tastes very good.

Candles can be tough to make

And that ink sure makes a mess on your fingers.

These and other lessons were among the things that Tilford Elementary 4th grade students learned on Tuesday during the Colonial Day.

The students made small paper and cloth quilts, churned butter, dipped strings in wax to make candles and participated in a variety of other activites that would have been common more than 200 years ago.

Steve Arnold, a retired elementary teacher, taught a lesson on early farming, including a discussion of how early Americans dressed in long sleeves even during the hot summer months. Students also made stencil and cross-stitch art projects and played a variety of old-fashioned games including marbles.
