Several Vinton-Shellsburg High School students gathered bicycles as part of the international Pedals 4 Progress program.

Vinton-Shellsburg alum and former UNI Panther Jim Womochil returned to Vinton to become a teacher and the Viking head football coach.

Garrison donors and volunteers made possible a new playground, as that city continues to recover from the effects of the 2011 storm. A new library project and fund-raising also began in 2012.

A group of local athletes, fitness enthusiasts and dare-takers raised thousands of dollars for the Wounded Warrior Project by competing in the Tough Mudders event in Minnesota.

Frances Crawford Lynch, a Gold Star wife whose husband died in action during World War II, received her husband's medals.

Tilford and Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School students planted many trees outside the two schools as part of the Trees for Kids program, another effort to recover from the 2011 storm.
