VINTON – Hazel Marie Snydock, 94, died Thursday, July 11, 2013, at her daughter’s home in Vinton due to chronic heart failure. Beloved mother of 9, grandmother of 39, great-grandmother of 74 and great-great-grandmother of 27 went to be with her Lord Savior and family that had gone before.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at Prairie Creek Christian Church in rural Vinton with Rev. David Arnold and Rev. Dennis Sackett officiating. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday, July 15, at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton. Interment will be in Cox Cemetery, rural Urbana.
Hazel was born June 25, 1919, in rural Vinton, Iowa, the only child of Walter Scott and Sylvia Topliff Burkhart. She was born on the 30 acres of land her father inherited from his father. It was there that she lived, loved and toiled. She attended Willmington Grade School and Taylor No. 3. With the help of Diana Ipsen, she received her G.E.D. from Kirkwood Community College.
On March 15, 1937, Hazel was united in marriage with Edward C. Tuttle in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He preceded her in death on November 24, 1961. On July 13, 1964, Hazel married Robert Snydock in Vinton, Iowa. He preceded her in death on December 24, 2001.
She worked as a homemaker and also helped with the farming. She raised her 8 children without electricity or running water. Her own hands provided the wild game and the garden produce that she put on the table. She had no career except “Mother.” She invested her life in her children, and today they bless her for being a woman of God. Heaven is richer for having this wonderful mother and friend.
Hazel was a faithful member of Prairie Creek Christian Church in rural Vinton. She loved all, judged no one, and was quick to forgive the injustices in her life. To the best of her ability, she walked in obedience to her Heavenly Father’s word.
Hazel is survived by four sons: Walter Tuttle of Vinton; Richard (Marlene) Tuttle of Urbana; Aaron (Ramona) Tuttle of Vinton; and John (Jule) Tuttle of Vinton; three daughters: Leila Williams, Joanne (Marvin) Roster and Ellen (Fred) Lerch, all of Vinton; son-in-law Don Merchant of Vinton; 39 grandchildren; 74 great-grandchildren; and 27 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Ed Tuttle and Robert Snydock; a son in infancy, James; a daughter, Viola Merchant; granddaughter Renae Tuttle; son-in-law Bill Williams; daughter-in-law Lynn Tuttle; and grandson-in-law Linwood Hunt.
A memorial fund has been established.
