Waterloo - Marjorie Amy Smalley, 82, of Waterloo, died Thursday, September 5 at the Cedar Valley Hospice Home.
She was born February 8, 1931 in Vinton, daughter of Leon and Ruth Avery Byam. She married Richard Smalley May 3, 1951 in Vinton. He died October 13, 1990.
Marjorie was employed as a telephone operator in Vinton and then worked at home taking in laundry and ironing as she raised her children. She later was employed in various capacities in the trucking industry, retiring from Kroblin Transportation Systems, RBS Xpress and Gray Transportation.
Survivors include a daughter, Shirleen (Robin) Formaker of Ames; four sons, Ricky Smalley of Tulsa, Okla.; Rocky (Kristi) Smalley and Rusty Smalley of Waterloo and Randy (Cindy) Smalley of Tucson, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren, Paige (Childo) Contreras, Ross, Robby and Richie Smalley, Kathryn (Matthew) Lambert, Jacob (Emily) Smalley, Linsey Smalley, Heather (Dontai) Ford, Tyler Smalley, Nicole (Neil) Baier, Reece (Cindi) Smalley and Ryan Smalley; 13 great-grandchildren, Diego and Giovanni Contreras, Ross Jr. and Ariana Smalley, Allison and Benjamin Smalley, Isaiah Smalley, Reighlyn and Nataleigh Ford, Camdyn and Jace Baier, Skyler and Savanna Smalley; two brothers-in-law, Ron (Carolyn) Smalley of Vinton and Roger (Carole) Smalley of Weirsdale, Fla.; her former sister-in-law, Cleo Henderson of Cedar Rapids and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by six brothers, LeRoy, Lloyd, Earl, Harold, Ralph and Ronald Byam and a sister, Helen Pollock; three nephews and a niece.
Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton. Public visitation will be from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Monday at Hagarty – Waychoff – Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway.
Memorials may be directed to the family.
Marjorie’s favorite pastimes were embroidery, playing solitaire and word search puzzles and baking for her family.
