ELBERON: Bessie K. Kaloupek, 101, died Saturday, January 18, 2014 at Belle Plaine Nursing and Rehab Center.
Graveside Services will be held at the National Cemetery in Vining at a later date.
Bessie was born November 24, 1912 on her family's 80 acre farm near Elberon to John and Frances (Hlavack) Silhanek. She graduated from Elberon High School in 1930. She attended summer school at Coe College earning a teaching certificate and taught in a one room country school.
In 1935 she was united in marriage to Ronald Kaloupek at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.
Bessie was known for her "hugs" and as a enthusiastic church and hospital volunteer who loved people and her family. Prior to the floods of 2008 she lived independently at Geneva Towers in Cedar Rapids.
She is survived by her sons, David (Mary Jane) Kaloupek of Waltham, MA, and Joe (Linda) Kaloupek of Elberon; her grandchildren, Tracy (Rod) Cheney, Deidre Carney, Tracy (Scott) Moran and Doug (Sue) Kaloupek; and her great-grandchildren, Cole and Blake Cheney, Joey and Danielle Kaloupek, Kaitlin and Colton Carney and Dylan and Katy Moran.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Ronald.
A memorial fund has been established for the Belle Plaine Nursing and Rehab Center in Belle Plane where she enjoyed all activities and interaction with visitors and the care center staff.
