VINTON: Milton A. Smith, 94, of Vinton died Sunday, June 29, 2014 at Virginia Gay Nursing and Rehab Center in Vinton.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM, Saturday, July 5, 2014 at Wesley United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Judith Bunyi officiating. The family will receive friends on hour prior to service time at the church on Saturday. Masonic Rites will be delivered by Tom Boeckman of the Vinton Masonic Lodge # 62 AF & AM. Full Military rites will also be conducted at the church by the Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post #57 and Iowa Military Funeral Honors. Private family interment will be held at a later day in the Troy Mills Cemetery. Phillips Funeral Home in Vinton is in charge of arrangements.
Milt was born March 15, 1920 to Lloyd A. and Mary Etta Washington Smith at Marion. Milt attended country school and later graduated from Central City High School.
He served his country in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II and was honorably discharged.
Milt was united in marriage to Margery D. Shaffer on July 3, 1943 at Central City. The couple resided in Linn and Benton County all of their married lives. Milt and Marge would have celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary on Wednesday, July 3, 2014.
He managed Independence Produce Company for eight years, was an artificial inseminator for Eastern Iowa Breeders for seven years and for nearly forty years worked in the real estate and insurance business, retiring in 2000.
Milt was a 68 year member of the Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post #57 in Vinton and a 67 year member of the Vinton Masonic Lodge #62 AF & AM. He was also a longtime member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Vinton.
Milt is survived by his wife of nearly seventy-one years, Margery of Vinton; his son, Phillip E. (Martha) Smith of Cedar Rapids; his daughter, Patricia A. (Richard) Hoover also of Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; three great grandchildren and his brother, William W. Smith of Wisconsin.
He was preceded in death by his parents and son, William H. Smith and his sister, Lloyda Hohlfelder.
