VINTON: Edward Allen Thompson 78, passed away on August 6, 2014, at his home in Northome, Minnesota.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, August 14, 2014 at the First Christian Church in Vinton.

He was born June 5, 1936 to Elmer and Pauline Thompson, at home, in Vinton. Ed graduated from Lincoln High School with the Class of 1953. Ed was known for his quick wit in high school. He was a good football player and won several awards including: Public speaking, Iowa Farmer, State FFA Vice President, and in 4-H showing cattle.

After Graduation he farmed and raised cattle north of Vinton. Ed enjoyed being a 4-H leader for over 20 years and serving as a Deacon at his church; Disciples of Christ First Christian Church. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting. Ed’s passion was cattle, he won the Champion Pen of Hereford Steers at the International Livestock Expo in Chicago and enjoyed being a Cattle Order Buyer.

In 1976 Ed and his family moved to Pennington, Minnesota and ran the Chippewa Pines Resort. In the 1980’s he was a Farm Bureau Insurance Agent in Vinton. He retired in Northome, Minnesota and continued to buy cattle, fish, and enjoy life.

His parents and grandparents preceded him in death.

He is survived by his five children, Becky and husband Paul Herger of Vinton, Iowa; Steve Thompson and wife Julie of Carlisle, Iowa; Kevin Thompson and wife Lynette of Almont, North Dakota; Scott Thompson and wife Marilyn of Devils Lake, North Dakota; Jeffrey Thompson and wife Molly, of Avon, Minnesota and their mother, Georgia Thompson. He is also survived by: 12 Grandchildren, 19 Great Grandchildren, and his two sisters, Carol and husband Bob Simmons, and Sharon and husband Larry Williams.
