WINTHROP – After living and making each day count for the past year, Larry W. Burkhart, 63, died Sunday, October 5, 2014, in the Ed & Joan Hemphill Hospice Unit in St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids due to esophageal cancer.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 9, 2014, at Church of Christ United in Winthrop, Iowa, with Pastor Dean Schlitter officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 8, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton and also from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Winthrop.
Larry was born March 5, 1951, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Clifford Wayne and Doris E. Johnson Burkhart. He was a 1969 graduate of Washington High School in Vinton and attended Hawkeye Tech in Waterloo.
On November 10, 1973, Larry was united in marriage with Joan Bateman in Winthrop.
Larry worked auto parts counter sales at Bumper to Bumper and Car Quest in Vinton. For the past 20 years, he had been the Maintenance Supervisor for Elliott Trucking in Dysart.
Larry was a member of Church of Christ United in Winthrop. He enjoyed fishing, racing and anything with an engine. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, and he always had a smile on his face.
Larry is survived by his wife of 40 years, Joan, of Winthrop; two sons: Troy (Tai) and Josh (Kari Benson) Burkhart, both of Urbana; one daughter, Jodi (Larry) Clay of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren: Gabe, Allison and Maddox Burkhart, Nyla Clay and Cameron Benson; four foster brothers: John Corbett, Oscar Cliburn, Jr., Howard Young and Kenny (Ann) Young; and his beloved four-legged companion, Zoie.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial fund has been established.
