VINTON:
Steve Johnson, 44, died Thursday, October 16, 2014 at his rural Vinton residence.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at the Vinton Presbyterian Church with Rev. Jessica Crane-Munoz officiating. Interment will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton. Friends may call at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. 6th St. in Vinton from 4 to 7 p.m., on Monday. In Lieu of flowers a Memorial Fund has been established. The casket will remained closed at all times.
Steven Dennis Johnson was born November 13, 1969 at Vinton to Dennis and Sandy (Whitson) Johnson and graduated from Vinton's Washington High School in 1988. An excellent wrestler, he earned the honor of wrestling at the State Tournament. After high school graduation, he attended Hawkeye Tech to study agriculture.
On August 20, 1994 he was united in marriage to Jeanne Cottrell at the Vinton Presbyterian Church.
Steve loved farming and was proud to serve as the Wrestling Coach for the Vinton-Shellsburg High School and he also enjoyed teaching the sport to young boys through the Little Vikes Wrestling Program. He had served on the Garrison Volunteer Fire Dept.
Steve was a man whose family was always his first priority. He adored his wife, children, mother and his sisters and their families. His many friends will always remember his great sense of humor and boating and hunting with Steve.
He is survived by his wife, Jeanne and his children, Daisy, Kort and Charlee all at home, his mother, Sandy Johnson of Vinton; his sisters, Diane (Jeff) Kenney and their children, Karley and Cassie of Vinton and Amy (Ryan) Noe and their children, Erica, Lizzie and Austin of Garrison; his uncle, Dick (Terrie) Johnson of Vinton; his aunt, Judy (Dan) Stevenson of Robins; several cousins; his father-in-law, Gary Cottrell; his brothers-in-law, Jason (Shannon) Cottrell and their children, Destiny and Dallas of Palo, Justin (Anah) Cottrell and their child, Jeremiah of Sheldon, and Jesse Cottrell and friend Vanessa of Vinton.
He was preceded in death by his father, Dennis on July 2, 2004; his niece, Ashley Noe; his paternal grandparents, Howard and Alma Johnson; and his mother-in-law, Becky Cottrell.
