VINTON:

Donald M. Shaffer, 89, passed from this earth to the loving arms of his Savior on January 28, 2015. Graveside Services will be held on Monday, February 9, 2015 at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton with Pastor Stephen Preuss officiating.

Donald was born April 6, 1925 in Mallard to John and Esther (McDumott) Shaffer.

He served in the US Army during World War II and was a member of the American Legion Post #57 of Vinton and the Lorenz, IA VFW.

Don worked for Herson Construction of Lorenz, IA. This job brought him to Vinton to paint the interior of the newly constructed Trinity Lutheran Church where he later became a member.

During this time he met Goldie Alpers Wright whom he married September 2, 1979. Goldie and Don continued to operate the Modern Motel until their retirement in 1997.

Survivors include his wife, Goldie; his step-son, Steven (Joyce) Wright of Cambridge, IA; step-daughters, Judy (Joe Wood, Jr.) Burkey of Vinton, and Kathy (Rod) Potter of Ankeny; six step-grandchildren;and seven step-great grandchildren.
