Eugene Gustav Kraus was born November 10, 1923, in Garnavillo Township, Clayton County, IA to August and Irene (Herchert) Kraus. He attended school in the Clayton County country school system and then farmed for his father. He served his country in the US Army during World War II in the European Theater Occupation Force in Germany. He was married on September 19, 1951, to Ivanelle Backes in St. John’s Lutheran Church in Guttenberg, IA. He and his wife farmed near Garnavillo and raised their family. He later worked for Rhomberg Implement, Fred Carlson Construction, and was a school bus driver for over 16 years for the Garnavillo Community Schools. He and his wife moved to Garnavillo in 1980.
Eugene was baptized and confirmed in the St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church of Garnavillo, IA, and was an active member all his life. He served as a council member and in the Brotherhood. He was a member of the Clay-Gar American Legion Post #723 and served as post commander. He enjoyed woodworking, reading, World War II history, and spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed, with his wife, being Sr. King and Queen in the 2015 Garnavillo July 4th Parade. After a short illness, he was called to his heavenly home on Monday, September 7, 2015. He was 91.

Mark) Urlaub of Vinton, IA, and Rollyn Kraus of Garnavillo, IA; 7 grandchildren–Brenda Wiskus (Phillip Munson) of Prairie du Chien, WI, Joseph (Crystal) Michels of Hettinger, ND, Christina (Brian) Wenko of Dickinson, ND, Justin Wiskus of Hettinger, ND, Stephen (Jen) Urlaub of Council Bluffs, IA, Rebecca Urlaub of Omaha, NE, and David (Ellie) Urlaub of Davenport, IA; 7 great-grandchildren–Stephanie (Andrew) Anderson of Maplewood, MN, Joshua Wiskus (Amber Blad) of Jesup,IA,, Brynn, Ty, Cade, Kole, and Noah Michels, all of Hettinger, ND; 3 great-great granddaughters–Autumn Wiskus of Jesup, IA, Kensingtin and Brooklyn Dettman; one great-great grandson, Corbin Reade all of Prairie du Chien WI, (and one expected).
Mr. Kraus was preceded in death by his parents; 3 brothers–Donald Kraus, Pfc. Marvin A. Kraus, and Lincoln Kraus; and a daughter-in-law–Roseann Kraus.
Arrangements are being handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, 001. S Industrial Park Rd, Garnavillo, IA, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Wednesday, September 9, 2015 and one hour before service at church. Funeral service will be at St. Paul Lutheran Church at 10:30 AM, Thursday, September 10, 2015, Rev. Gary Hatcher officiating. Interment will be at Ceres Cemetery, Guttenberg, IA.
In Lieu of flowers, memorials are being designated to benefit St. Paul Lutheran Church, 104 S Adams Garnavillo, IA 52049.
