VINTON:
Retired Naval Commander Paul David Coyle, 85, died Saturday, December 26, 2015 at Virginia Gay Hospital.
“Duty, Honor, Country” - Paul served his nation from 1947 to 1975 with distinction and honor in the U.S. Navy as a Naval Engineer. Following his honorable retirement from the Navy, he servedas Director of School Maintenance, Facilities, and Operations in Simi Valley and Santa Barbara California.
Paul was born November 5, 1930 in Boston, MA to James E. and Mary A. (McDonough) Coyle and graduated from Boston Technical High School. He earned his B.A. Degree from Chapman College and an M.B.A from National University.
On September 17, 1955 he was united in marriage to Elva M. Staton at the Naval Training Center in Great Lakes, IL. The couple moved to Vinton, Iowa in1989. Elva preceded him in death on March 12, 2000.
Paul was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Vinton where he served as Grand Knight and Financial Secretary of the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post 57 of Vinton, VFW Post 88 and a Life Member of the Fleet Reserve Association and Retired Officers Association. An active member of the Vinton community, he served on the City Council for eight years and enjoyed membership in the Day Breakers Kiwanis Club.
He is survived by his sons, James (Barbara) Coyle of San Antonio, TX, Paul (Cathy) Coyle, Jr.of Chesapeake, VA, DennisCoyle of Vinton, Alan Coyle of Vinton, and Thomas Coyle (fiancée Terri Kraycik) of St. Petersburg, FL; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his brother, Kenneth Coyle of Nashua N.H..
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, James Coyle and his sister Eleanor Nagle.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 4, 2016 with Father Ardel Barta as Celebrant, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Vinton, with fellowship meal to follow. Committal Services will be held at Troy Mills Cemetery near Troy Mills, Iowa with Graveside Military Rites conducted by Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post #57 of Vinton with U.S. Navy Funeral Honors.Visitation will be held from to1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday January 3, 2016 at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. 6th St, Vinton, where a Scripture Service will begin at 1 p.m.. In lieu of flowers, a Memorial Fund has been established for the Vinton Library.
