ATKINS:  Arthur H. “Art” Taschner, 90 died Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at the Dennis & Donna Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha. 

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, February 6, 2016 at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church in Atkins with Rev. Douglas Woltemath officiating.  Interment will be in St. John Lutheran Cemetery near Newhall with military honors conducted by Adolph H. Schueler American Legion Post #217 and Iowa Military Funeral Honors.  Visitation will also be held at the church on Friday from 4 to 7 PM in St. Stephen’s Fellowship Hall.  A Memorial Fund has been established. 

Art was born April 4, 1925 in Howard, South Dakota to Julius and Emma (Senne) Taschner.  He graduated from Newhall High School in 1943 and then received his Associates Degree in Electrical Engineering from Valparaiso Institute of Technology in Valparaiso, Indiana.

He served his nation in the United States Army during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1948.   Art was united in marriage to Geraldine Coble on October 20, 1956 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids.

Art worked as a Test Technician with Rockwell-Collins Radio for 34 years and as a part-time custodian at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church and Central Lutheran School in Atkins.  Following his retirement, Art worked as a Courier for Guaranty Bank in Cedar Rapids. 

He was a longtime member of St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church and Adolph H. Schueler American Legion Post #217.  Art served on the Atkins Volunteer Fire Department for 56 years.  He also volunteered for Benton County Emergency Management; served on the Atkins Library Board for twelve years and assisted with construction of the new library.  In his leisure, Art loved photography, genealogy and feeding the birds.

Art is survived by his wife of 59 years, Geraldine of Atkins; his two children, Rhonda Taschner of Cedar Rapids and Dennis Taschner of Atkins; and his sister-in-law, Arlene Taschner of Keystone and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers:  Waldo, Myron, Clarence and Herbert Taschner.
