NEWHALL: Viola Werning, 98, died Friday, September 17, 2010 at Rock Ridge Residential Care in Shellsburg following an extended illness.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, September 20, 2010 at St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall with Rev. Steven Rempfer officiating. Interment will be held at St. John Cemetery near Newhall. Friends may call at Phillips Family Center, 605 2nd Avenue in Vinton from 3 to 6 PM on Sunday. A Memorial Fund has been established.

Viola was born March 9, 1912 in rural Vinton to Charles and Mary (Abraham) Knuth. She was baptized at her grandparents home in Vinton in June 1912, and was confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Eldorado Township in 1935. Viola received her early education at Eden No. 7 Country School and graduated in 1930 from the Vinton High School. She taught in country school in Eden Township from 1930 to 1935 prior to her marriage.

On February 16, 1935 she was united in marriage to Lloyd Werning at St. John Parsonage in Eldorado Township. The couple farmed and made their home on the family farm for twenty-nine years until retiring to Newhall in 1964. Lloyd preceded his wife in death in 1987.

An active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall, she taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for forty-six years, was a member of the church choir, Tabitha Society, Lamplighters, and Quilters. She also enjoyed membership in Eden Community Aid, Newhall Women's Club, Newhall Reject Kitchen Band, Newhall Leisure Club, Benton County Farm Bureau Women, and served as Benton County Fair Departmental Superintendent.

Viola is survived by her sons, Russel Werning, and Glenn (Marjorie) Werning, all of Newhall; her grandchildren, Dave (Lynnette) Werning of Perrysburg, OH, Mary Shepherd of Cedar Rapids, Becky Weidenhamer of Cedar Rapids, Greg (Tami) Werning of Tiffin, Gene (Andrea) Werning of Spring, TX, and Barry (Brenda) Werning of Blairstown; and her great grandchildren, Austin and Mason Weidenhamer of Cedar Rapids, and Samantha, Madison, Nathan, and Danielle Werning of Blairstown.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Alice Werning.
