TRAER – Mable E. Brezina, 88, passed away Thursday, April 7, 2016, at her home in Traer due to complications of cancer.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 13, 2016, at St. Paul Catholic Church in Traer with Father Ray Atwood as Celebrant. Visitation will be held at the church Tuesday, April 12, from 4 to 6 p.m. with a Rosary service beginning at 6 p.m. Interment will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, Tama.
Mable was born December 6, 1927, in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of Leo and Christina Seidel McCabe. She attended school in Chelsea.
On September 17, 1951, Mable was united in marriage with Charles F. Brezina at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama. The couple farmed together and raised four children. He preceded her in death on March 26, 1993.
In addition to working on the farm with her husband, Mable worked at the Tama County Home; as a waitress in Marshalltown; and as a CMA at Sunrise Hill Care & Rehab Center in Traer. Following retirement, she continued to volunteer at Sunrise Hill.
Mable was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Traer and was active in the Rosary Society. She enjoyed quilting, gardening and baking. Mable’s life revolved around her family, and she cherished time spent with them, keeping them warm with her handmade quilts and well fed with her famous kolaches. She will be dearly missed.
Mable is survived by three sons: Michael (Jan) Brezina of Iowa City; David Brezina of Traer; and Paul (Jean) Brezina of Redwood Falls, MN; one daughter, Charlene (LeRoy “Woody”) Wood of Traer; one sister, Gladys Choate of Des Moines; special cousin, Virgil Vavra of Chelsea; 7 grandchildren: Joni Brezina of Cedar Rapids; Michael and Lacie Brezina of Traer; Matthew (Ashley) Brezina of Reno, NV; Tim Brezina of Brookings, SD; Scott (Gail) Wood of Vinton; and Jeff (Jen) Wood of Traer; two great-grandchildren: Tucker and Desiree, plus one on the way.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles; sister Florence Saltzman; and special cousin, Jerry Vavra.
A memorial fund has been established.
