Arnold Haar, age 96, died Sunday, May 22, 2016 at the Vinton Lutheran Home.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 27, 2016 at St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall with Pastor Steven Rempfer officiating. Interment will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids, with graveside military rites. Friends may call from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday at the church in Newhall. A memorial fund has been established for the Vinton Lutheran Home or St. John Lutheran Church.
Arnold was born on December 9, 1919, in Menno, South Dakota, the son of Fred and Emma (Heckenliable) Haar. As a young man, Arnold served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Black Hills of South Dakota. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II from January of 1941 through September of 1945. Arnold served in North Africa and throughout Europe, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. On June 22, 1946, he was united in marriage to Donna Seeman at St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall. The couple farmed south of Newhall until their retirement in 1992.
He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, the John Ward McGranahan American Legion Post #167 in Newhall.
He is survived by his children, Janet Haar of Cedar Rapids and Steve Haar of Atkins; his grandchildren, Jared (Melea), Jacob, Joel and Jaymes; his great grandchildren, Melody and Violet; his brothers, Raymond Haar and Arthur Haar, both of Yankton, S.D.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Donna on December 18, 2015; 2 brothers Henry (Gladys) Haar and Herb (Jean) Haar and 3 sisters, Annette Haar, Anna (Wallace) Lee and Linda (Don) Merrigan.
