VINTON: Jack Douglas Oliphant, 90 of Vinton died Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at the Hiawatha Care Center. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, October 21, 2016 at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 East Sixth Street in Vinton. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time at the funeral home on Friday. Graveside Military Rites will be conducted by Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post #57, 40 & 8 Voiture and the United States Navy at Oliphant Cemetery, Center Point. A memorial fund has been established. Jack was born November 10, 1925 in Toddville the son of James Douglas and Nellie Lucille Hagerman Oliphant. He graduated from Newhall High School in 1944. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II from 1944 - 1946. After his service he graduated from Barber College in Cedar Rapids. On April 4, 1948, Jack was united in marriage to Norma Jean Hart in Anamosa. She preceded him in death on September 25, 2002. Jack worked as a barber for 35 years and spent 17 years engraving monuments retiring in 1988. Jack was a life member of the American Legion, affiliated with the Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post #57 of Vinton, the 40 & 8 Voiture 625 Past Chef de Gare Club of Vinton. He had also been a past member of the Elks Club. Jack was a lapidarist, polishing and cutting stones to make jewelry. He and his wife raised and showed Arabian Horses. Jack is survived by one daughter, Deborah K. (Harlan E. Jr.) Koopman of Center Point; two sisters, Maxine Primmer of Center Point and Rita Rhodes of LeGrand; two grandchildren, four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and one brother, Howard Oliphant and his special pal, Topper.
