John H. Waalk, Sr., 93, formerly of Garrison, died Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at Kavanagh House in Des Moines following an brief illness.
Private Committal Services will be held at the Garrison Cemetery.
John was born August 5, 1917 near Monona to Guy A. and Mabel Frances (Fredrica) Waalk. John served his nation in the US Army.
John lived in Garrison many years until moving to Des Moines in 1992. He was employed as Superintendent at Martin Marietta Aggregate for forty years prior to his retirement in 1980. He was a lifelong Chicago Cubs Fan, and enjoyed gardening.
He is survived by his wife, Cleo Waalk of West Des Moines; his sons, Gerald (Linda) Waalk of West Des Moines, and John (Diane) Waalk, Jr. of Ankeny; his daughters, Marcia (Carl) Vandenwymelenberg of Alamo,TX, and Jean (Axel) Andreasen of West Des Moines; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; his brothers, George Waalk of Houma, LA, and Fred (Dee) Waalk of Elgin; and his sister, Mabel Mae Duke of Balsom CA and Millie Grady of Monona, IA
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Evelyn and Ruby; and his sister, Mary.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Walden Point Senior Living Center or Kavanagh House in Des Moines.
