VAN HORNE:     Evelyn Louise “Eva Lou” Herzberger, 96, died Tuesday, January 25, 2011, at Keystone Nursing Care Center in Keystone.

     Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 29, 2011 at Salem United Methodist Church in Van Horne with Pastor Norm Bennett officiating.  Interment will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery in Cedar Rapids.  Friends may call at the Phillips Funeral Home in Keystone from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday. 

     Eva Lou was born July 1, 1914, in Walker, Iowa, the daughter of Glenn and Elsie (Dudley) McPike.  When Eva Lou was two-months-old. the family moved to Van Horne, Iowa. Eva Lou graduated from Van Horn Public School in 1932, never missing a day of school in 12 years. She attended CoeCollegefor several months but had to drop out to help in the family business during the depression.

     Eva Lou was united in marriage to Roy C. Herzberger on September I, 1935. They worked in Mac's Cafe eventually buying the business from Eva Lou's father. They sold the cafe in 1960, and she began working for the Van Horne Consolidated Schools as secretary to the superintendent.  She was employed by VHCS and the BentonCommunity School Districtfrom 1960 until her retirement in 1977. Afterretiring, she worked part-time at the Van Horne Library also serving on the Board. She was a member of Salem United Methodist Church and the Nettie DeWall Circle. She served as financial secretary andcommunion steward for many years. As a founding member of the Van Horne Sewing Club, she enjoyed meeting with the group of women monthly for over 60 years.

     Eva Lou is survived by her daughter, Susan (Kennit) Urbain of Owatonna, MN; son, Jim (Linda) Herzberger of Atkins; and son-in-law, Roger Hanken of Van Horne; her grandchildren,Michael (Cindy) Hanken of Marshalltown, Chris (Nicole) Urbain of Eden Prairie, MN, David (Lori) Hanken ofBloomington, MN, Adam (Nelly) Herzberger of Vinton, Tara (Neil) Patterson of Springville; great-grandchildren, Amy (Chris) Bland, Elsie and Porter Hanken, Haley Voss, Hunter Mann, and ChaseUrbain; and great-great grandson, Presley Bland.

      She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy; daughter, Diane Hanken; infant Hanken grandson, and infant granddaughter, Stephanie Herzberger.

      In lieu of flowers, memorials in Eva Lou's name may be made to Keystone Care Center, SalemMethodist Church, Van Home Library, or a charity of your choice.
