Mle Berniece Muzingo, 93, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, Dec. 27, 2020, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 2, at Oak Grove Church, 6101 32nd Ave., Shellsburg, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. followed by the service at 2 p.m. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Shellsburg. Mle was born on April 25, 1927, in Perryton, Texas, the daughter of Johnny and Anna Peterson (Jantz). She graduated from high school in 1945 and married Leo Muzingo on Sept. 25, 1947. In 1974, she graduated from Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids with a B.A. degree in elementary education. She was an aide at Shellsburg Consolidated School for five years, followed by 16 years of teaching, retiring in 1992.
Mle had many hobbies. She was a seamstress and quilter. She was an avid bird watcher, feeding them in her yard and recording each species that visited her. But her greatest joy was her garden. She could tell you the history of every plant in her yard! Mle was a member of the local Ladies Farm Bureau, attending meetings and going on trips with her fellow members. She attended Oak Grove Church in Shellsburg for many years as a member, and participated in many Bible study groups.
She is survived by two sons, Glen Muzingo of Shellsburg and Lyle Muzingo of Harlingen, Texas; also, two stepsons, Gary Scott (Judy) of Burnsville, Minn., and Larry Muzingo (Nora) of Yukon, Okla. Also four daughters, Iris Coy (Marion) of Wildwood, Ill., Neva Abbott (Dan) of Tullahoma, Tenn., Jo Ellen Lear (Bruce) of Sioux City, Iowa, and Leslie Muzingo (John Campbell) of Mobile, Ala.; as well as 16 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren (including "step" and "adopted"). Her sister, Rita London (Ron), also survives her.
Preceding her in death are her parents; her husband; brotherm Delmar Peterson; sister, Wynona Anderson; and son, Aaron Muzingo.
